A group of 30 Aboriginal children, staff and families from SDN centres at Redfern, Newtown and Waterloo had the opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal dreamtime stories at the premiere of Leah Purcell’s latest play.
The group ventured to the Sydney Theatre Company (STC) to see The Dreaming – Wake Up Australia!, which is directed by Leah Purcell and stars Angeline Penrith, a talented young Aboriginal actress.
The play is an interactive performance for children aged three years and up showing at STC during the April school holidays.
“It is a contemporary portrayal of traditional stories that I hope teaches children about Aboriginal stories that have been passed through the generations. The Dreaming – Wake Up Australia! focuses on the awakening of the land and uses storytelling, song and dance to illustrate how the great spirits coloured the Australian landscape,” Leah Purcell said.
After the performance, Deb Mann, the Director of SDN’s Aboriginal Unit Ngara Nanga Mai said, “The play is a great opportunity to see Aboriginal culture presented in such a positive light. Leah’s play is an important cultural experience for young children to learn more about dreamtime and creational story telling.”
