SDN Linthorpe Street in Newtown was visited by the Aboriginal entertainment and education group, Koomurri on Wednesday 6th April. This was in response to the two-year-olds at the early education centre showing interest in Aboriginal culture.Over the last few months the staff at the centre have been reading Aboriginal dreamtime stories to the children, painting Aboriginal artworks and talking about bush tucker.
The Centre Director, Elleni Nicholson, felt that ‘showing the children parts of Aboriginal culture, like face painting, the didgeridoo and Aboriginal dancing, would be a great way to extend their knowledge and interest, while having some fun along the way’.
Russell Dawson from Koomurri taught the children Eora Aboriginal words, made different animal sounds with his didgeridoo and showed them the dances of Australian animals such as the emu and kangaroo.
One of the parents from the centre, Glen said that his daughter Edie ‘was still talking about the workshop the next morning, she loved it and I heard it was really good’.
