Happy 90th birthday SDN Northern Suburbs!
Thursday 8 December, 2016
This week we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the opening of SDN Northern Suburbs.
SDN Northern Suburbs lies nestled at the end of a leafy, quiet street in Crows Nest, from where it has been providing quality early childhood education and nurturing child care for 90 years.
SDN Northern Suburbs was officially opened on 11 December in 1926, when SDN realised support was required by working mothers living in the Northern Suburbs who needed to travel long distances to our inner-Sydney nurseries.
The nursery was originally housed in a refurbished cottage. SDN’s 1926 annual report noted the building ‘of one storey, facing east, with a small sunny garden on either side, where the members of the Northern Suburbs Committee look forward with pleasure to seeing the little ones in their red frocks playing safely and happily’. In the early 1930s, a nursery school was added, providing an educational program for children 2 years to school-aged.
Over the years the local community supported the centre to continue to thrive, with activities such as a fundraising street fair in the 1950s. The cottage was replaced on the same site in the mid-1970s by a fit-for-purpose child care centre. Further improvements, including the development of attractive outdoor spaces, have been added more recently to create the modern, engaging centre enjoyed by children today.
