SDN Redfern

About the centre

SDN Redfern Children’s Education and Care Centre has been operating since 1938. The child care centre caters for 51 children between the ages of six weeks and five years old. We are part of SDN Children’s Services, a not-for-profit organisation with more than 106 years experience in early childhood education and care, as well as targeted support services for children.

Our staff

The team at SDN Redfern values relationships with families and we aim to always be welcoming and respectful of families. Our educative team is made up of 13 staff, including early childhood teachers, educators and support workers. We also work closely with SDN’s Aboriginal Unit, Ngara Nanga Mai and local Aboriginal elders. Our staff speak a range of languages, including Auslan signing, Bengla, Cantonese, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Vietnamese, and Yugoslavian.

Our care and education programs

We appreciate the important responsibility of looking after children and nurturing their development in the early years. Our programs focus on the children’s interests and we are engaging with the Early Years Learning Framework in new and interesting ways.

Our learning environments facilitate play and the development of a wide range of skills including forming relationships with peers and educators, appreciation of the natural world, art, music and early literacy and numeracy skills. Much of our learning occurs through small group experiences with the assistance of an educator.

We have individual rooms for the infants, toddlers and preschool age groups, but our flexible program enables time for siblings and children of various ages to play together. Our outdoor environments include a courtyard for the younger children and a large shady playground for the toddlers and preschoolers.

Location

SDN Redfern is in the heart of the community. We have relationships with local community leaders, service groups and organisations that represent the vibrancy and diversity of Redfern. The local community provides a vibrant learning environment for our children and we regularly go on excursions.

Testimonials from families

‘Our eldest started at SDN Redfern seven years ago and our youngest is currently in the toddlers room and loving it! There is no greater comfort than bringing your child to a place each day where they are so warmly welcomed, loved and cared for by people who know them well, like an extended family.’

‘I would like to express my deepest appreciation for the care, comfort and support provided to both myself and my daughter from SDN Redfern. I have no hesitations in leaving my almost new born daughter in your care with the knowledge that she will be looked after by qualified and caring staff who will treat her like the little princess she is.’ Cara.

‘My daughter started at SDN Redfern when she was only three and a half months, as unfortunately I had to return to work. While it was extremely hard to leave her in childcare at such a young age I was totally confidant leaving her in the care of the SDN staff. Lauren receives so much attention and is looked after as if she belongs to the staff. When we arrive in the mornings they all want to hold her. She smiles for each of them and is still smiling when I pick her up in the evenings. She has learnt new skills and has made new little friends. SDN Redfern is a home away from home, one big happy family and I would like to thank the staff for making us feel so comfortable in leaving Lauren in their care’ Ruth.
