About the centre
SDN Marrickville opened as a child care centre in 1944 to meet the needs of families who worked in local factories. These days our families work further afield but we remain committed to our early values of providing high-quality education and care for children, and supporting the needs of our families.
Our staff
Very committed and friendly staff makes SDN Marrickville an ideal child care environment for young children and families. Our educational programs are supported by two Early Childhood Teachers, one Mothercraft nurse, four TAFE-trained Educators and four experienced Early Childhood Assistants. Our team of Educators is passionate about working with children and families as well as working at SDN Marrickville. In fact, SDN’s longest serving staff member, Peggy Lane, has worked at our centre for 35 years! Our staff speak a range of languages including, Mandarine, Contonese, Vietnamese, Nepali, Telugu and Hindi.
Our care and education programs
We cater for children from birth through to five years old. Our early education curriculum is based on children’s individual interests and celebrates children as capable members of our learning community. Children are seen as decision-makers in their own lives. Strong, respectful relationships underpin our practices. We give priority to nurturing relationships from the moment a family joins our community. These relationships and children’s learning experiences are visible to families through documentation and individual portfolios.
Location
Our centre is situated in the heart of the Marrickville shopping area, which is an important element of our curriculum. Children regularly visit local shops, cafés, the library and fire station, as well as the Chinese restaurant and art gallery across the road. The multicultural nature of Marrickville is reflected in our families as well as our team. We employ Chinese, Vietnamese and Portuguese speaking educators who are able to speak with children and families in their first language.
The newly renovated infants’ playground is an ideal environment for enthusiastic explorers, while the older children discover their abilities among large shady trees and a combination of open spaces and set equipment. The outdoor spaces complement our indoor environments, and both are available to children at all times throughout the day.
