SDN Hamilton St

About the centre

SDN Hamilton Street has been operating in Bathurst since 1951. It is one of the original child care centres in the area and was purpose-built by SDN. Many of the 1950s post World War II migrants moved to Bathurst, with the centre becoming a place for people to join the local community.

If you love a natural environment for children, with giant trees, real grass, real dirt, real leaves and real mud – it’s here. If you like children to see first hand how plants and vegetable grow – it’s here. If you like your children to learn about insects and bugs, and see them in their natural environment – it’s here.  If you want to see your children become happy and confident people – it will happen here!

Our staff

Many of our staff have tertiary qualifications, including two Early Childhood Teachers, two staff members with diplomas and four with Certificate III in Children Services qualifications. Our staff turnover rate is very low, with some staff having been with SDN for more than 15 years.

Our care and education programs

The staff to children ratio is above the minimum requirements in most of our rooms:

  • in the birth to two year olds’ room there are six to eight children
  • in the two to three year olds’ room there are 14 to 16 children
  • in the preschool room (for children aged three and a half to five years old) there are 24 children.

We welcome visitors and also enjoy getting out into the community on excursions with the children.

Location

Our building is a weatherboard structure that is full of character. It is fresh, airy and welcoming. Families often comment on its lovely feel and fantastic green outdoor area. Our program allows children to participate in learning both inside and outside.

The outdoor space is large and has many interesting points including a vegetable garden and a hedge maze (great for hide-and-seek) as well as shaded gardens. We are currently developing a new fairy garden and a new outdoor scented garden for the birth to two years group.

Testimonials from families

‘My daughter loves going to school at Hamilton Street and is already telling her little brother how much he’ll enjoy being in the baby room when he starts there. The great outdoor area, excellent programs and caring staff mean you can head off to work knowing your children are safe and happy.’

‘SDN Hamilton St has a great reputation in Bathurst for being one of the best places for your child to go. Our two children are attending here and absolutely love it. Our son started here this year (age three) and had previously never been interested in drawing – within the first two weeks we couldn’t get him to put a pencil down. We’re very surprised at what our daughter has learnt in her time. She can’t wait to go each day and never wants to go home.’ Kel and Andy.

‘I chose SDN Hamilton Street for my children because of all the fond memories I had there when I was a child. SDN isn’t just a child care centre, it is a home away from home – every day is adventure. The environment is relaxed, open, friendly and natural. I love that my children can play freely together even though they are in separate age-based rooms. The staff are caring and creative and are wonderful role models for the children.’ Luisa.
