The Brighter Futures early intervention program is a new initiative providing targeted support to vulnerable children and families to prevent their problems from escalating. The program is targeted at families who are expecting a child or have children up to eight years of age and are experiencing at least one vulnerability:

  • Domestic violence,

  • Parental drug and alcohol misuse,

  • Parental mental health issues,

  • A lack of extended family or social supports,

  • Parents with significant learning difficulties and/or intellectual disability,

  • A lack of parenting skills or inadequate supervision,
  • Child behaviour management problems (eg: parent / child conflict, school problems, parenting difficulties).

SDN will be working with over 100 local area agency partners to provide case management support to over 200 families enrolled in the program. Together we will be working towards:

  • Healthy development in children,

  • Strong, functional and well supported families,

  • Reduced child abuse and neglect in participating families.

Our Brighter Futures program will incorporate home visits, parenting programs, playgroups and child care placements. Further support will be provided as parents and children transition out from the program and into school. Our model is flexible and innovative, with capacity to meet the individual needs of diverse families while capitalising on the strengths of our partners.

Further, SDN has the support of local Aboriginal organisations including the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Early Childhood Sector Advisory Group (ATSIECSAG) offering the best chance for these communities to access and benefit from early intervention services.

SDN has established Brighter Futures offices at Redfern, Beverly Hills, Sutherland and Eurobodalla:
