Helping children with autism

This program is funded under the Australian Government’s Helping Children with Autism package (HCWA) – administered by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHSCIA).

What does SDN’s Helping Children With Autism program do?

  • We coordinate a wide range of early intervention services for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • We can assess your family’s needs in relation to your child.
  • We can help your family put together an Individual Intervention Plan.

What early intervention services do you offer?

The current range of available services includes:

Early intervention
  • play-based group therapy
  • visits from our Early Intervention staff to your child’s other early childhood services.
Speech pathology
  • individual therapy
  • group-based therapy.
Occupational therapy
  • standardised assessment
  • observational assessment.
Psychology services, which include but are not limited to:
  • education
  • development of social skills
  • stress management
  • individual therapy sessions
  • individualised behaviour management programs.

How can I access these services for my child?

  1. Your child needs to have been diagnosed as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  2. Please go to the FaHCSIA website and lodge an application.

You will be able to claim up to $6000 for the first year and up to $12 000 for two years. You can continue to use your HCWA allocation until your child turns seven.
