What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme and is a national scheme designed to provide targeted support and improved access to services for individuals living with disabilities. It’s a new way of funding and gives eligible participants choice and control to choose the services and help that they need, in the way that they want.

SDN welcomes the introduction of the NDIS and we’re excited about the positive impact this will have in helping to give all children the opportunity to reach their promise and potential.

How does the NDIS work?

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is the Australian Government agency responsible for implementing NDIS.

The NDIS means that you and your child can get services and support in your community. This could be in the form of emotional support, information services, connection to mainstream services like community health services, playgroups or peer support groups or short term early intervention therapy for your child.

If your child requires long term and ongoing support, the NDIA will work with you to develop an individual plan to support your child’s needs and help them to achieve their goals. This plan translates into a funding package under the NDIS. The level of support and funding provided for each child will directly related to their needs. As a child’s needs change, the funding plan can be adjusted accordingly. Families will be able to decide how to manage their child’s funding package and choose which service provider best meets their needs.

Where is the NDIS available?

The NDIS commenced in July 2013 and is being introduced in stages in various locations around Australia.
