40 Safety and wellbeing The safety and wellbeing of children and staff is a priority for SDN. We have invested time and effort in training staff in safe work practices. As a result the number of incidents leading to lost time injury has reduced and, combined with supportive return to work practices, we continue to reduce our workers compensation claims and therefore the cost of our workers compensation premiums as a percent of wages. Staff engagement SDN did not run a staff survey in the 2017–18 year. Following our most recent survey in March 2017 the decision was made to run them less frequently. Our results have been consistent since our first survey in 2011, and have also been consistently high, with the most recent survey giving us an engagement score of 81%. Our next staff survey will be run in late 2018. Staff turnover has increased to 25.95% for the year to 30 June 2018, however this included vacant positions deliberately not filled. Staff retained for more than three years increased to 49.92% as at June 2018. Supporting students Learning and education has always been important for SDN and has played an important role in SDN’s make- up, culture and mission. We encourage our staff to do further studies by giving them flexible working hours and study leave. We supervise students who are training to be early childhood educators, teachers and social workers. During 2017–18 we supervised 99 students, which was 10 more than the year before. Each year we offer scholarships to tertiary students, and in 2017–18 we granted the SDN Phillips Scholarship to Anna Woolley and the SDN Phillips Prize to Zoe Mintoff, both from the University of Wollongong. SDN Learning and Development Awards Each year SDN offers Learning and Development Awards in recognition of staff who continue to develop themselves, both professionally and personally, by undertaking further studies whilst working. These awards recognise an employee’s endeavours in developing their skills, knowledge and experience, and their ability to bring this professional development back into the workplace.
