Marian Achkar Director SDN Ultimo
I have a Diploma in Early Childhood, from Bankstown TAFE. I started working with SDN as a casual teacher after leaving my job as a legal secretary in 2001. My cousin was working for SDN at the time, and she encouraged me to return to working in early childhood. I worked as a casual for SDN for five years before taking on a permanent position at Ultimo as the team leader in the toddlers room – and I’m still here now, acting as Centre Director!

I love that SDN is committed to helping families in need and offering support to them through their various programs. I also love watching the children grow from when they first start with us as babies, and then growing into independent children who then go off to primary school.

Our centre is unique in that we see a lot of children come through the centre as we are based in the TAFE and we get many families who are studying which means that we meet lots of families and learn to build relationships quite quickly. Also, the staff at SDN Ultimo have been together for quite a while, so families often comment on how the centre feels like a home and family.

One special memory of SDN I have is being invited to SDN’s centenary celebration at Parliament House and meeting the then Governor of New South Wales Dame Marie Bashir AD, CVO, who was a student of SDN while she was studying.

In my spare time I love to SHOP! SHOP! SHOP!

Marian is currently the acting Centre Director at SDN Ultimo, covering for Christie Sherfan who will return from parental leave in May 2018.
