Hands-On Pasta Play: Cut, Thread, Create

Support your child’s fine motor development through cutting and threading pasta, helping them build hand strength, coordination, and confidence with small, controlled movements.

Spaghetti cutting

 

What you'll need:

  • Child safe scissors
  • Spaghetti pasta
  • Pot with boiling water
  • Optional food colouring and zip lock bag

What to do: 

  1. Cook spaghetti in a pot of boiling water.
  2. Allow to cool completely 
  3. If you wish to add colours, use small amount of food colouring and shake in a zip lock bag.
  4. Use child safe scissors to snip and cut the spaghetti. 

Pasta Threading 

 

What you'll need:

  • Penne pasta, rigatoni pasta, wheel pasta or any shape you like with holes
  • Pipe cleaners 
  • String or ribbon
  • Optional Food colouring and zip lock bags

What to do: 

  1. If you wish to have coloured pasta add your pasta to zip lock bag pour in small amount of colour and lay in sun on flat surface to dry.
  2. Collect items and simply slide the pasta onto your chosen string, ribbons or pipe cleaners
  3. The different size holes allow for children to explore more complex hand and finger movements
