What you'll need:

  • Large container
  • Water
  • Cleaning sponges choice household or car sponges
  • Scissors 

What to do:

  1. Cut sponges into different sizes
    (With adult supervision, older children can try cutting the sponges into simple shapes like triangles or stars.)
  2. Fill container with water
  3. Squeeze water from sponges 

Engagement prompts (things to say or ask during play):

  • "Does the sponge feel wet?"
  • "How much water is coming out of the sponge?"
  • "What happens if you squeeze harder?"
  • “What shape is your sponge?”

Asking children engagement questions supports language development, critical thinking, and helps children make sense of their experiences through conversation and reflection.
