Scoop, Sort and Pour

Support your child’s fine motor development, hand–eye coordination, and concentration as they scoop, sort, and pour pom-poms and small edible items like cereal using spoons, tongs, and cups

What you'll need: 

  • Pom poms
  • Spoons
  • Scoops or measuring cups
  • Bowls
  • Tongs
  • Small dry cereals e.g Nutri grain or cheerio’s
  • Flat based container
  • Small items e.g small cars, buttons 

What to do: 

  1. Pour pom poms/ dry ingredients or other small items into flat container
  2. Use tongs, scoops and spoons to scoop up items
  3. Sort into bowls, cups or simply scoop and pour
  4. Encourage your child to explore colour by sorting items into groups or scooping items of the same colour into a bowl
  5. Challenge your child to collect a set number of items, such as 2 of each colour or 4 green and 2 yellow
  6. Ask questions like, “What happens if we pour the big bowl into a small bowl?” or “Which bowl will fill up first?” to support problem-solving
  7. Encourage your child to make up their own sorting rules, such as grouping items by size, texture, or type
