What sank the boat? Develop children's understanding of weight through water play

Skills and benefits:

  • Learning scientific concepts
  • Understanding of cause and effect
  • Fine motor skills

What you'll need:

  • Aluminium foil
  • Tub or deep tray
  • Water
  • Small items for placing in the foil boat - small stones, sticks and flowers, small toys

What to do:

  1. Fill the tub at least 3cm deep with water.
  2. Fold and shape a large square of aluminium foil to make a boat that floats. Older children can be challenged to design and make their own boat.
  3. Place the boat on the water and talk about what might happen.
  4. Ask your child to add the other assorted objects and explore. Does the boat sink or float? What happens when things are added?
